ABOUT THE TROOP

The Scout Section is for young people, usually aged between 10½ and 14 years. A young person can come in to the Troop at 10 and may stay until they are 15 years old. The Scout Troop is the third and final Section in the Scout Group.

The 4th Birkenhead Scout Troop is a good sized troop who enjoy a variety of different activities and events.

The Scouts have always enjoyed outdoor activities, one of the favourites being rock climbing. One of the most popular venues for the troop is Irby Quarry where the Scouts are generally able to attempt at least three different climbs and one abseil.

Another traditional Scouting activity that the troop enjoys is hiking. The troop has taken part in many different walks in a variety of conditions including a 7 mile night hike on the Wirral. The Scouts enjoy going on day walks around North Wales and Snowdonia as often as possible. The most recent hike was arranged with very little leader input with the Scouts doing all of the organisation and route planning.

During the summer the Scouts try to spend as many troop nights out of doors as possible. This creates the ideal opportunity to practice traditional scouting skills such as fire-lighting, knot work, pioneering, tent erecting, bivi-building and backwoods cooking. These nights out are also used for large scale wide games and general outdoor fun things like tree climbing, river jumping, mud sliding and generally getting wet, dirty and having a laugh. These outdoor evenings also provide the opportunity for holding investitures in strange places.

Camping has always been a major part of any Scouting calendar and the 4th is no exception. Every year the 4th as a whole tries to organise a large group camp which the Scouts always take an active part in. The Scouts also try to organise a number of smaller section camps throughout the year. These are normally arranged using more traditional methods with the Scouts managing their own patrol sites. Each patrol is responsible for cooking their own meals using an open fire and for looking after their own patrol tents and equipment.

In addition, the troops occasionally organise special camps for Patrol Leader training and outdoor activities. These camps can take place indoors as well as under canvas. The Patrol Leaders training weekends are particularly useful for increasing the skill levels of the P.L.’s such as teaching knife and axe techniques for which the troop runs its own authorisation scheme.

During the darker winter months, the troops try to organise trips to go ten pin bowling, swimming and other indoor recreations. These are another source for unusual investitures!

If you like the sound of our troop and are aged 10 -14, then why not come and join in and see if you like it. The troop meets on a Monday night in the Prenton area of Wirral. If you are interested then please contact me and I will try to get in touch with you as soon as I can. In the mean time you can view the introduction pages taken from the introduction booklet you will receive when you join the Scout section.
